subject: Printers for Windows

Hi Jonathan,
You wrote to Jeff Malka:

JDBP>Hmmmm. That could well be misleading. To a printer, the source of the
JDBP>downloaded fonts and printed data is largely irrelevant.
JDBP>DOS, OS/2, DOS+Windows, or whatever, it doesn't care. To
JDBP>me, the above says that the printer manufacturer has
JDBP>finally decided to not ship reams of specialised printer
JDBP>drivers and downloadable fonts for DOS programs, such as
JDBP>WP/DOS, on a floppy disc along with its printer (often one
JDBP>set of driver+font files per DOS application, since there
JDBP>is no common standard).
Typically Oki printers with a "W" in the part number are Windows GDI
printers with no (or minimal) internal "smarts".
The only similar OKI one I can find in current catalogues is the Okipage
4W LED (at around 160 to 180 pounds) which is a windows GDI printer with
no internal smarts. Only useable under Windows and Win 95. DOS programs
can only be handled by running them in the Windows DOS box when it
emulates HPs LJ IIP (PCL 4.5)...
