-> Hercules? Last one of those I worked on was a HX series. 6 cylinder
-> flathead, maybe 900+ cubic inch? Ran a 150kw generator for backup
-> power at a radio station. Probably 1947 vintage unit. Was replaced
-> by a Cat diesel 10 years ago.
These were li'l ole bitty four bangers, maybe 50 Cu. in. Mostly with
irrigation canal water cooling. Generally direct drive to the compressor
and sometimes with a belted 5-8Kw AC generator for driving fan motors
etc. I saw some of the cutest radial three and five cylinder
compressors and a few inline fours.
Our local radio station has a 50KW Onan powered by a Chrysler slant six
225 Cu. In. and impossible to cool! If the power outage lasts very
long, count on the chizzler starting to boil.
