This is to wrap up the fun and games in getting a copy of eCS1.1 installed
on a (new) IBM Thinkpad mod T41.
To refresh, we could not install above the 1024 cyl HD boundary. Also, with
LVM, we could not place the BMgr anywhere except cyl 1, the front of the
HDD.
So, we used Partician Magic 8.0...moved XP to make room for the
LVM BMgr in Cyl 1...etc. The 1024 boundary is at 7.6 gb here.
Even with LVM IX13 boot Mgr, we could do nothing above the 1024 cyl.
We ended up with BMgr (7mb), XP (5.5Gb) and two 1 Gb volumes that we
did install eCS1.1 into (all below the 1024 boundary). So we are
working here but it is not nice. Still have gotcha's like:
1. The XP recovery partition will not reload unless the disk is blank.
2. the IBM recovery CD package will not load unless the disk is blank.
3. the recovery packages load into HDD cyl 1 and wipe out your BMgr.
So, if you happen to have any eCS around, it's gone...gone...gone!!
The only liveable solution we see is to buy XP (read: ugly) that will
install with the LVM BMgr in place to 3 or 4 Gb and still leave 3-4 Gb
for eCS boot room.
In summary, we know of no way to beat the 1024 boot boundary on
this TP T41. (And the LVM BMgr must go in the front of the drive at cyl1
because it can not put it at the end of the drive.)
If anyone has better answers here, I'm all ears!
