Just give me time and I will catch up.

Each has advantages and weaknesses. For me, part of the appeal
that linux has is the learning. It can be extremely frustrating
however without a guru close at hand.

Yes USB can be flakey at times, but that is true of windows as
well. I think most problems stem from BIOS/chipset
incompatabilities. In my own experience the offender was the
VIA chipset. Disabling the onboard services and adding a
USB/Firewire card with an ALI chipset solved that problem.

The windows box also has some problems with USB, but because
microsoft has earnestly removed any useful hardware
configurability I must live with it. Linux running on the same
hardware has no problem at all.

Shipping would probably have been prohibitive anyway, but I was
thinking smaller. Thank you very much anyway. Something will
turn up, I'm in no rush.

Come over to the dark side Jean ;)

It could be worse ...
