I dunno much about dying burner drives, but FWIW I have a few boxesfull
of "BAD" CD/ROM drives here, and the most common failures have been
either failure to spin up, or failure of the tray eject/retract
function.  Gots to get past those two before worry about whether the
drive will read/write or not.  If those functions work, but it acts
R/W flakey, I'd think the cleaning effort would be the next step.
