Hello Wayne -

WC>>> LG was specifically named in a FAQ about Linuix as having
WC>>> a problem.

->> Within one or two years at the most hardware manufacturers
->> are going to have to acknowledge Linux as a legitimate OS
->> and supply drivers for their junk or find it collecting
->> dust on store shelves.

WC> I'm going to wait a few weeks and see if the ACER CD-ROM is
WC> recognized properly in there and try the Turtle Beach sound
WC> card with it.

WC> Another PITA as it means pulling the machine apart just to
WC> try it and if it fails repeating the procedure to put the
WC> LG CD-ROM back.

I added an extension to the power connector and an extra long
IDE cable to one machine then pulled those out the back through
an unused slot cover. I could switch hard drives rather easilly
at that point since it was just lying there behind the computer
on the desk. :-)

WC>>>>> Boots the ramdrive but fails and locks up with
WC>>>>> soundcard in

WC>>> >> :-(

->>>> That's the other shoe that drops when trying to use Linux
->>>> - soundcard on the motherboard or combined
->>>> modem/soundcard with no Linux driver.

WC>>> No, not in this case. I installed the Turtle Beach sound
WC>>> card and removed the software modem - sound card.

->> HPs have little 'wiggle room' left in them - I've opened a
->> few.

WC> Can you believe it the reason I had to tear it apart was
WC> because neigther the input jack board OR the cable could be
WC> manuvered in such a way as to get them out!!!

Yes, I believe you. Even in my 'whitebox' tower they bundled
the wires and then put nylon straps on them which limits
movement unless I want to cut the straps and deal with the mess.

WC>>>>> My last hard drive toasted so I'm ramdrive only here.

->>>> How/why are you losing hard drives?

WC>>> Wellll, in pulling the entire machine apart to get at
WC>>> just that one little useless daughterboard I failed to
WC>>> notice the IDE connector had partially pulled out of its'
WC>>> socket when removing the left side panel. Poof, toast.
WC>>> Only a Seagate 340 Meg so no big deal.

->> I stress when any piece of hardware becomes unuseable
->> needlessly. It's not that they cannot be replaced it's just
->> the frustration that it shouldn't have happened. I
->> destroyed a set of amplified speakers some time ago and it
->> still angers me even though I replaced them for $10.

WC> Well the spinal injury here has led to me destroying
WC> hardware out of impatience :-(

Old age has done much the same to me. That and I usually have
no 'bench' to put the machine on to work on it and must crawl
around on the floor. :-\

WC> I get on a roll and forget my time limit is about two hours
WC> a day before my stamina goes and with it goes my critical
WC> thinking ability :-(

IMO computers are not designed to be 'worked on' only used then
tossed away for a new one. My brother, who never married,
recently was having problems with his machine and I told him he
could sink $200 or so into parts/labor to have it fixed or just
buy a newer/faster machine. He opted to buy the newer/faster
then decided to fix the old one as well. Now he has two
machines. :-)

WC> I do have one last hard drive in the 486 but it has
WC> important files on it so I can't put it at risk by swapping
WC> it around.

I wouldn't take the chance either. Something goes wrong every
other time I start moving hardware around. :-\
