Hello Wayne -

--8<--cut

WC>>> My last hard drive toasted so I'm ramdrive only here.

->> How/why are you losing hard drives?

WC> Wellll, in removing the stupid jacks only ( no other
WC> components) daughterboard for the sound card you have to
WC> separate the left side case just to pull the darn cable off
WC> and through the machine :-(

WC> In the course of doing same I failed to notice the IDE
WC> cable partially unseated from IDE channel 0, poof. No big
WC> deal, only a Seagate 340 Megger.

Three of those and you have a gig. I wish this wasn't happening
to you.

WC> On another front I just pulled apart an old AT power supply
WC> and was astonished at the crud accumulated in there and
WC> shocked it still worked.

WC> Cleaned I intend to place it in the 486 and clean that one
WC> as it's likely just as bad.

I had to replace my USR Robotics internal with a winmodem
recently and in the process discovered that the powersupply
vent on the bottom was very near blocked off entirely by dust.
I removed said dust and promised myself to inspect the insides
of the tower more frequently in the future. :-)

WC> New years present for me, big hard drive and BIOS'ed I/O
WC> card!!!

There are many 'sales' at Best Buy (not sure you have them in
Florida?) but they involve rebates - sometimes multiple
rebates. I don't trust them to mail me back the money so I look
at the rebates as a 'maybe' and judge the pricing accordingly.
