I think the point is that in order for a Star Trek film to be
"successful," it has to work for the non-Trek fans. In the first ten
minutes of First Contact *I* knew what was going on. Several people in
the theater were confused. The movie should have spelled out the back
story better and moved people into the action more smoothly.
Once they went back in time, the film did most things right. :-)
