I would be *very* interested in anyone who has had some
experience with red-lored Amazons. When I bought "Toto" six
years ago I was told that the breed is not noted for talking,
but that it might learn a few words as time passed.
Well, time has passed and while Toto is a remarkably sociable
little guy, and mimics many sounds, he does not have any
interest in talking and doesn't seem to get off on the sound of
his own voice (I had an African grey which burbled to itself and
chattered for several hours every day).
Is there anything that can be done to get a parrot to make the
speech connection? As I said, Toto *does* mimic sounds -- like
the swallowing sound I make in my throat when I drink a cup of
coffee or a glass of water, occasionally he'll make sounds of
laughter, or more personal sounds (he has been known to make a
definite fart-like noise when he felt the occasion warranted
it).
I've tried everything short of a continuous loop tape. He gets
off on television shows with violence, also gets very vocal when
I play an opera.
And best wishes to all from Port Hope!
