"Pre-formatting," as I was using the term, was to produce a single long
file with all the HP esc sequences in order.  This would be
unpleasantly unfeasible for a long document (novella, short story,
book, &c.), but for a short letter (shopping list, cooking recipe), it
would be more reasonable.  And, as you pointed out, there are just a
couple ways of producing multiple output.
