Hers, mine, and the laptop all have internal modems and nics. Each are
attached to an 8 port (room to expand)ethernet switch.  My desktop made
gateway is .1, the laptop is .2, the wife's is .3. All are set up in
TCP/IP Configuration LAN0 to look through hosts first as there is no
server, no DHCP. .1 is the only one that has IP  Forwarding checked.
Each has a Default and Net Route configured, pointing to .1. Each has
in LAN Nameserver the DNS addresses of my ISP. Each has the host name
configurations of the other two machines.

.1 running ECS1.1 and Injoy with NAT enabled is online through my ISP
with it's internal modem. While .1 is online, .2 and .3 have access to
the internet through the network, through .1.  .2 and .3 also share the
printer attached to .1 as .1 is the printer server.

Now, I go to work, and the gateway computer is off. The ethernet switch
is off. My wife wants to access her email. With no network, she must
dial the internal modem on her machine. At this time it is a standalone
computer with a modem. This is the time that her modem does not answer
the dialler for a minute or two, then suddenly replies, dials and works
normally. It seems that TCP/IP is looking at LAN0 and must time out
before releasing to the modem.
