Some USB scanners will work with Linux (or other unix-like operating
systems), most likely the ones that use SCSI commands over USB hardware.
Presumably there's a list somewhere of models that work.

I'm sure that there are many other things that Linux is useable for, which
isn't to say that it should be compulsory... ;-)
