You call the API. Or you can do it like C++, by encapsulating the API in, for example, programmer-defined statements. IBM supplies PL/I copybooks with all the OS/2 API routines declared for PL/I usage. There is a tool called Visual PL/I that IBM supplies as part of the PL/I Toolkit. The toolkit is an extra-cost option, not bundled with the compiler. There is also Gpf-PL/I, which is like the other Gpf GUI generators. I have only the IBM Visual PL/I. It generates all the code required for API calls. It works with either Professional Edition or Personal Edition of IBM's PL/I compiler. For SQL database access you need to buy IBM PL/I for OS/2 Professional Edition or MicroFocus PL/I for ADMVS. The latter includes IMS DL/I support too, but it is very expensive; in fact, ADMVS is the MicroFocus workbench that more-or-less puts MVS on your desktop. The IBM Personal Edition of the compiler does not support SQL or DL/I.
