Laurence:
LC=>I have been considering a larger boat like a Catalina 30 or Newport 30,
LC=>these both have the interior headroom I need, but I am not sure if
LC=>I am willing to give up the ability to trailer, and the high cost
LC=>of a permanent berth in a marina is a serious drawback too...
Many years ago, when I first got into sailing, I looked at trailerable
boats too. I'd been a power cuddy-cabin boater (20') and had enjoyed
trailering around to different lakes... I'm a diver, too, and this type
of boat made MUCH more sense than a large boat.
I looked at all manner of trailerable sailboats - the one that caught my
eye the most was the Jeanneau Tonic 23 (it had "almost" standing
headroom for me (6'2") and an interior that rivaled many 25' boats!). I
ended up getting a good deal on a Kelt 7.6 - definitely NON-trailerable.
The sailing is better - period. Like all boats there is a varying set
of comprimises in the design... different boats : different trade-offs;
but a full-keeled boat will (almost) always sail better than one which
has designed to trailered 1st, sailed 2nd.
Thing is, I got so much into enjoying a (what the Kelt is) true
off-shore cruising boat that I forgot about not being able to trailer
it... no longer had any desire to do so. Now, after 4 years, I've
bought another boat - a 36' Jeanneau... definitely not trailerable(!).
So that's just one persons' story - your priorities, like mine did, may
change....
Hope it's been "some" (read itsy, bitsy, tiny, miniscule) help.
