Subject: Training Programme for Adaptive Technology
Hello listers,
As we have been telling you we have a new Adaptive Technology
training programme under construction here in San Antonio. It will be part
of the new Resource Center for Persons With Disabilities operated by Warm
Springs Rehabilitation Hospital. the center will house the latest
state-of-the-art computers, and access technology for the disabled including
blind persons.
We plan to offer training in the use of this technology but we need
help and input concerning just what kind of training should be offered. for
example should there be prerequisets for such training, and what should they
be? Should we develop a core curriculum in the use of adaptive technology
modeled on the core programs offered for general rehabilitation at our
training centers, or should we consider the all-to-familliar menu approach
in which the student gets just what they will need such as training in the
use of a stand-alone reading machine, and nothing else. Personally I am in
favor of a training scheeme that will expose the student to all types of
adaptive devices for the blind as it will not only give them a general idea
of how each type of access device works, but it will also allow them to make
intelligent choices as to which devices will meat his-her needs in a given
situation, and can make informed choices as to which adaptive hardware to
perchase, or cause to be perchased by a state Vocational Rehabilitation
Agency, or some other entity.
We would like to have your input on these matters so we can begin
designing one of the best adaptive technology training programs in the
World. We hope to hear from those of you who are adaptive technology
trainers, and look forward to a lot of meaningfull input on this matter.
Please reply to all recipients as one of them is the Coordinator of the Warm
Springs Resource Center. Your thoughts and input will greately assist us in
developing this training programme. thanks in advance, and have a great
weekend.

Never underestimate the power of a dream.
