Hello Wayne -

--8<--cut

->> I have no real interest in HDTV. I watch videos now and
->> then but not a great deal of 'television'. A DVD reader in
->> one of my machines would be sufficient for that.

WC> I've no real interest in HDTV either but that's all we're
WC> going to be left with soon and I DO watch PBS a lot.

I suspect we'll have TV viewing on the internet about the same
time there is _only_ HDTV remaining on the 'airwaves'. Question
for me is will I have enough bandwidth to watch TV on the
internet when that happens? :-)

WC>>> I keep an eye on the classifieds for used computers. Wish
WC>>> I could do the yard sale thing as friends have gotten
WC>>> remarkable deals there.

->> People will part with some really good hardware once it
->> begins to give them problems. No one will part with a
->> working monitor now that they can buy a new computer
->> without a monitor.

WC> I found 2 - 19 inchers left by the dumpster at the curb in
WC> the last year alone, both SVGA, both work fine :-)

You live in a parallel universe. :-)

I should've said here in Mich no one gives up working monitors.
:-)

WC>>> Then too I could order a case, motherboard CPU combo and
WC>>> go from there but that would be a while off.

->> Once you have a sufficiently large hard drive the rest is
->> comparatively easy or so it seems.

WC> Yeah, that's sort of my plan. Tiger Direct has a Soyo
WC> boarded bare bones system, power supply, case, 512 meg RAM
WC> 40 or 60 Gig hard drive and 2.8 Gig AMD Athalon for $390.00.

WC> Probably one of those boards with non-tantalum bypass caps
WC> prone to leaking but hey upgrade as you go. Comes as a kit
WC> in a box. It's ATX form factor so swapping boards no
WC> problem One thing I DO like is 5 free PCI slots and 4 & 8x
WC> AGP independent video card. No operating system.

I've seen deals on new machines with those specs plus a CDRW
assembled and ready to use. I don't much care for the pricing
of TigerDirect's 'kits'.

What most of us need to be 'forever' satisfied is something
server-class with more wattage in the powersupply than we will
_ever_ need and at least 1 gig of memory. THEN we will be
satisfied (for awhile). :-)

WC>>>>> I do have one last hard drive in the 486 but it has
WC>>>>> important files on it so I can't put it at risk by
WC>>>>> swapping it around.

WC>>> Never fried anything until the last few years but if I
WC>>> exceed a very limited time engaged in moving stuff around
WC>>> it's a near certainty I've come to acknowledge :-(

->> Me too.

WC> Kinda sucks getting old doesn't it?

I tell young people that all the time. They think I'm kidding.

WC> In a way it works out pretty well sometimes. By the time
WC> you're about to shuffle off you really don't mind.

If there was only myself to consider you would be right. I know
you don't want to leave your dog behind to fend for himself and
I am 'caretaker' of a dog that was abused by it's original
owner and feel he deserves a decent home where he no longer has
to be afraid - where he can 'rest'. Everyone loves Shelby
(Shelbert Admiral Cliff) so far and I think my younger sister
would jump at the chance to care for him so maybe my 'mission'
here is finished?
