Store might have been starving it, by time bought, too late
to save it.

According to simon & schusters guide, which has graphs,
Environment: probably of running water (streams etc)
temp according to species 64-79 F(18-26 C)
ph and water hardness: no special requirments
The ph scale has ph 6-7-8 shaded in.
Did you have the temp too high? like 84-88 F?
It is a type that likes high 70s to the low 80s
(80-82 F) at highest.
... Don't bother me now, I'm digging up my 'ROOTS' !
