Hi Jim,
Sounds to me like the symptoms one gets when the FSB/RAM speed settings 
are out of whack [mismatched]! It's a safety feature to stop the system 
blowing up!

Just get the BIOS update, they're virtually all DOS-based anyhow, you 
just "need" Windows to extract the ROM file and the Flash utility 
itself, which you can then add to any bootable DOS diskette.  You can 
probably extract all the files using ZIP.EXE [OS/2 version]! :-)
