When it comes to anything related to the arts, whether its music,
poetry, or painting, or anything else, evaluations are always
subjective. But that doesn't mean that people should keep their opinions
to themselves, especially in a forum dedicated to expressing opinions.
But picking a single "best" album is almost impossible, because there
are so many different criteria for judging. For many acts that cranked
out lots of individual songs, a "greatest hits" collection might be
considered the best example of their work. Other albums were outstanding
in their day because of their impact on the music scene, but they've
been surpassed by other performers who built on what went before. Others
are "best" because they evoke memories of a bygone age. Others are
"best" because they still sound good today.
So I'll go out on a limb and list (in no particular order) what I
subjectively regard as some of the best and/or most influential
progressive rock albums of the 60's & 70's.
The Child is Father to the Man -- Blood Sweat and Tears
Days of Future Past -- the Moody Blues
Piano Man -- Billy Joel
Ina-gadda-da-vida -- the Iron Butterfly
Tommy -- The Who
Abbey Road -- the Beatles
Bat Out of Hell -- Meat Loaf
Desperado -- the Eagles
We're Only in it for the Money -- the Mothers
Goodbye Yellow Brick Road -- Elton John
A Night at the Opera -- Queen
Court of the Crimson King -- King Crimson
