I mostly base whether I follow *any* URL on trust of the sending party.

For example, Sigma Xi sends out daily news items with snipurls. Since I
trust the organization, I never worry about following one of them. Besides
which, they usually give the name of the source to which the snipurl
presumably leads.

Other lists to which I subscribe could require more caution, but I tend to
avoid those that might.
