I agree that there are vast rip-offs in the industry, and I own
quite a few of them.  :-(  But as things have developed during
this thread, I am convinced that we are talking about two
entirely different critters (at least, I hope we are).  But
still, the issue is what kind of modem are we talking about. 
When you go on line with a dial up modem, are we dealing with
the same frequencies that a DSL modem uses?

A word of caution on that statement...I spent a career as a
naval officer and I can attest that to make equipment suitable
for the marine environment requires much different standards for
the same piece of gear that is only going to be used in New
Mexico.  You have to go to sea on a destroyer or frigate to
fully understand the extent that the "salt air" permeates the
interior of the ship (along with diesel/jet fuel fumes, etc.). 
If it isn't *really* marinized, the equipment's failure rate is
going to be unacceptable.

I'll let the airedales speak to the aviation evironment.
