subject: JANE, ADHD AND BEDWETTING

I bet you all just loved that catchy subject line....
JK{ There is no way in hell that any of the problems stemming from the
JK{ genetic alcoholism are going to disappear. They can, however, be
JK{ made much worse by those who do not know how to diagnose and treat
JK{ the children born into these families, be the presenting symptom one
JK{ of hyperactivity or of a problem with urination.
Hey, Jane, that is a great point. Bedwetting and ADHD. Guess what? It
has been studied. I wrote this some time ago...
I was looking in some older issues of Barkley's ADHD report and came
accross this:
Clinical Correlates of Enuresis in ADHD and non-ADHD Children, Journal of
Child Psychology and Psychiatry, 36, 865-877 (for the factually
challenged, that is called a "citation".) The quotes are from Barkley's
synopsis.
"Studies have shown the the co-occurrence of ADHD and enuresis is around
30% and is higher than expected by chance....The clinical correlates of
enuresis remain unclear."
Data was collected in a means that was blind to the clinical status of the
child. "Results showed that: (1) enuresis did not increase the risk for
psychopathology for children with or without ADHD; (2) enuresis was not
associated with psychosocial adversity or developmental immaturity; (3)
enuresis was associated with increased risk for learning disability,
impaired intellectual functioning, and impaired school achievement in
normal control children BUT NOT IN CHILDREN WITH ADHD (emphasis
added);....
So, the way I read this is that if your kid is wetting the bed, it is a
good sign. Be happy that he is an ADHDers and a bedwetter. Imagine if he
did not have the ADHD!
ADHD and Bedwetting....perfect together....
