Hi, I just popped into BikeNet to look around and noticed some of the posts
re: three speeds. I use them for utility and commuting bikes I own. Several
friends have been using them in conjunction with rear derailers and 5, 6 or 7
cog clusters... seems to be working well for them, and on tandems too.
So, I found a used Specialized Globe 7 - $300. It has the Nexus internal
rear hub 7 speed with a hand lever actuated hub brake. The shifting is
really smooth from a stop or while pedaling. The range in inch gearing is
from approximately 35 to 87 inch gear.
I hear that the Sachs model, also 7 speed, offers a wider range.
And, BTW, the hub brake is very firm and, of course will be little affected
by rain water. The bike also has contilevered front rim brakes.
