subject: Setting up dual boot

Greetings, John...
John Thompson hastily said to Bob Wright:
BW>> Well, lemme see here... from personal experience:
 BW>>
 BW>> a) because it's easy to install.
JT> Well, you should only have to do that once.
....theoretically, yes...
BW>> b) if you've only got ONE hard drive, DOS is already
BW>> installed, along with a whole bunch of stuff that you'd rather
BW>> not lose. (Remember, boot manager installation requires
 BW>> partitioning).
JT> There are several commerical (Partition Magic) and freeware
JT> (PRESIZER and FIPS) non-destructive partition resizing utilities
 JT> available. When I installed OS/2 v2.1 I used PRESIZER to shrink
JT> my existing DOS partition to create space for an HPFS OS/2
 JT> partition.
Yes, I know that now... back then I didn't, and I'd expect that most new
users wouldn't.
BW>> c) if (B) and you don't have a tape drive for use in creating
 BW>> a full drive backup.
JT> Although I did have a tape drive and current backups, PRESIZER
JT> made the change with no data loss.
see above..
BW>> d) you still have to boot native DOS because your terminal
BW>> emulator (supplied by your MS-centric employer) won't work in
BW>> WINOS/2 (or you don't have time to figure out how to get the
 BW>> *()&)(*& to work).
JT> Once you get Boot Manager set up it's no harder to go back and
JT> forth between DOS and OS/2 than Dual Boot, and a lot less risky,
JT> IMHO, since it doesn't rely on copying system files each time you
 JT> change OS's.
Like I said. I know that NOW. And obviously (maybe?) I am using boot
manager now..
JT> Which terminal emulator are you referring to? I have yet to find
JT> a terminal program that doesn't function under OS/2's DOS or
 JT> Win-OS/2.
Attachmate Extra for Windows.. I had it working, eventually, under Warp red.
Now it doesn't seem to want to work for more than about ten minutes in
Win-OS2 under Connect.
I have a copy of Extra for OS/2 now, but I probably am going to donate it to
the local user's group. It seems to want either NETBEUI, Netware, or SDLC
connection. I have yet to find out how to make a RAS connection (NT server)
to our mainframe from Connect, and we use ADLC for dial-up otherwise.
