Hello Steven,
I'm quite fond of the Fish era of Marillion also!
SV>Marillion: _Script for a Jester's Tear_. This is a really fantastic
SV>album. Almost as good as _Misplaced Childhood_, if not even
SV>better. /He Knows You Know/ is the best song, and typically
SV>Fish-Marillion. And the cover is also very important.
_Misplaced Childhood_ Is most definatly my favorate. I've found that the
best way to listen to it is from start to finish, loud, and with no
interruptions ;)
On _Script for a Jester's Tear_, the title track is my favorate all time
favorate Marillion tune.
SV>Marillion: _Fugazi_. Nice music, but not as good as _Script_. The
SV>lyrics are great, the music is nice, but they don't really work
SV>together. And the music is not balanced enough. The album is
SV>not really one organism, like _MC_ or _Script_.
I know what you mean on this one. I still really enjoy the album but it does
not flow together very well.
SV>Both these albums are far better than the new marillion I've bought
SV>(Brave) and the Fish solo I've heard (Internal Exile). Are
SV>great Progrock bands destined for this kind of downfall?
It is unfortunate. I have a few of the Hogarth era albums and can not get
into them much. They are still better than grunge though ;)
SV>
SV>Checking the dates, I noticed that _Script_, _Fugazi_ and _MC_ are in
SV>fact a trilogy: 1983-84-85. The story is also more or less
SV>coherent. Is _Clutching at Straws_ (1987) the sequel to these?
SV>_Misplaced Childhood_ sounds like it's a definite ending of a
SV>story. And the _Straws_ cover is not in the same style.
_Clutching at Straws_ has it's moments. The album starts off fantastic with
Hotel Hobbies, Warm Wet Circles, and That Time of the Night but then falls
apart until the very end. IMOHO, the songs in the middle sound like they
were just stuck in there to make the album long enough to sell. They are not
bad songs but sound like they should have just been singles or another album
should have been developed that would build on a theme with them.
I have Fish's _Internal Exile_ album as well but have not been able to get
into that one much either. I just listened to it again this morning and it
still has not grabbed me.
