I downloaded Telemate for Windows 1.00 over the weekend so I've only
used it a couple of days. I went back through the few days worth of
back messages in the Telemate echo and I've got a few questions and my 2
cents.
(I normally stick with a DOS comm program because so far I haven't
really found a Windows one I liked. And normally I don't mess with 1.00
stuff because there is no real difference between that and Beta, but I
figured registration is $39 so I'd try it and if I like it I might
register before he brings out the 1.1 version and raises the price.)
1: How do I get rid of the file listed in the 'recent file list' in the
FILE menu? It was of an old .gif that I had already looked at the day
before and deleted but the entry was still there and nothing I did got
rid of it. I finally had to edit the .ini to remove it.
2: The screen updating is incredibly SLOW. It does it 2 or even a
dozen lines at a time. Very very distracting. None of the other
Windows comm programs I've tried behave like that. The scrolling speed
is okay, even on my slow video card. With some Win comm programs, it
can't scroll fast enough to keep the screen in sync (because they
smooth scroll), but TMW can.
3: A quick exit button in the HELP would be nice. Online help gets
used quite a bit and a quick exit like most provide is a nice feature.
I like the online help. It's a lot better than the dos version. Given
the choice of only off line docs or online help, I'd choose on-line help
because that's when you need it. I still wish there was off line docs
though. I always tend to feel that I'm missing some neat feature. Like
that pressing the right button will bring up a quick menu. I don't see
that listed in the help anywhere. The online help could be a bit more
complete, but it is certainly a vast improvment over TM4.12 Be nice if
you gave all the options for the .ini
4: The ANSI emulation doesn't blink characters. I'm on one board that
uses blinking text to show what menu item is selected. But TMW doesn't
blink.... Other Win comm programs manage to do it.
5: I wish that when you tagged files that it also included the path.
That way it would be easier to upload files from odd places. I tried to
do that and I had it all set up tagged but when I tried to UL it, it
couldn't find it because there wasn't any path info.
6: How the heck do I get rid of the scroll bars in the terminal? I've
got my window maximized and set to 80x30 but there are horizontal and
vertical scroll bars and there shouldn't be. 80x30 does fit. It fits
fine in the terminal window before dialing. After connect it adds the
scroll bars. I can change the terminal size and then change it back to
80x30 and the scroll bars disappear and the full 80x30 is visible.
There is just something about dialing with that size that cuases it to
add scroll bars even though it doesn't need it. If I get rid of the
tool bar then scroll bars disappear, but... If I reduce it back
to 25 it does okay, but WildCat 4.x has bugs in its file listings and
will do 3 or 4 extra lines sometimes so I like setting my terminal to
allow for that. And I need a full 80 accross because the BBS uses the
full 80.
7: Any plans to add fax sending?
8: The 'How Too...' in the help always comes up in the lower right
corner. Seems to me that it should be centered a bit more. Or at least
raised upwards.
9: Anyway to change the cursor from the vertical line to a more
comfortable horizontal line?
10: The UL and DL speed seem to be a bit slower than usual (1570 rather
than 1640 under DOS), but that may just be Windows or maybe the board is
just a bit slow the past few days. No errors though since I did
remember to add the COM3FIFO=TRUE to my system.ini
11: No GPF's, crashes, or other major bugs, although I see several
messages about them.
12: I wish the GIF viewer handled color translation from 256 to 16
better. I normally run Windows in 16 color because it's faster than 256
colors and my video card is slow. (It's an ISA, I don't have the $100
to get a VLB one.) And some of the gifs just don't look too good. I
think the old GifLink used to handle them a bit better, although
realistically, I know there is only so much that can be done.
All in all, it looks very promising. I'm definitly interested in it.
Especially for the price since Qmodem, Procom, etc. are all so much more
expensive. And with Telemate, you get later versions (bug fixes and
enhancements) for free. When I buy something I may not particularly
care about getting future ones for free, but at the very least I do want
major bug fixes for free.
