| subject: | Hard Drive for New System |
JH>I need to build up an AMD Athlon system for my son for Christmas. JH>I plan on putting either a 40GB or an 80GB HDD in there. His present JH>'puter will be retired, and the OS he has is Win98SE. JH>As I see it, to keep cluster sizes small, best for the 40GB drive JH>would be 15/15/10 or so, formatted to FAT32. I don't think he would JH>want or need any smaller subdivisions than that. JH>In case of the 80 GB drive, looks to me like he would be best off JH>to upgrade to an OS which will support NTFS. JH>Comments, corrections and suggestions are invited. Jim, from my personal experience he would be far better off to go with XP Home or preferably XP Pro. Both have so much more compatibility with more devices than any previous Windows versions. With XP and an 80 Gb drive formatted NTFS, cluster size doesn't really matter much. The only fly in the ointment is the possibility that some of his current applications may not work with XP.
