subject: Borg Thoughts II: The Wrath of Khan

 Hi there!
I suddenly noticed that it's been over a month since I posted the original
"Borg Thoughts", and the messages prompted by it have been going ever since.
I thought I'd post a compilation for the benefit of those who haven't seen
all of them.
Original Question #1:
The Borg claim in _First Contact_ that they are the greatest lifeform in the
Universe, combining the best features of organic and machine. So how come
they can't reproduce themselves?
My apologies to those who wasted their time pointing out that just because
we haven't seen it, doesn't mean it doesn't happen.
I knew that. When I asked "So how come they can't reproduce themselves?", I
meant "Why have we seen no signs that they can reproduce themselves?"
Their body design, especially in the nether regions, doesn't suggest
reproductive ability to me. ;>
Dean Basler suggested that they use some form of in-vitro fertilisation.
(Perhaps they have an implanted device for that as well - quicker and less
messy than nature's original. :) )
Boris Terzic noted that the Borg definition of perfect - which, remember,
includes having little bits of metal stuck in you and surrendering free will
- might not include reproduction.
Rupert Woolger and Michael Marek each pointed out that in the TNG episode "Q
Who?" there was a Borg nursery with matching young Borg.
Michael Marek suggested that Hugh might also have been `born a Borg', as it
were, since we were told nothing of his pre-Borg life. (Nobody's suggested
that Borg babies are somehow born with implants! :) )
Jim Morgan pointed out that the young Borg may have been an assimilatee, but
it's hard to see why a) the Borg would assimilate one so young b) they'd
keep in a nursery instead of treating it like any other assimilatee.
His response to the Hugh suggestion was "Did we need to know that for the
story?". (Would a Borg tell anyone about its pre-life? Would it even remember
it? Getting in first, Locutus is a special case.)
The last word goes to Jim Morgan, who suggested that we wait for more
information.
"Maybe 7 of 9 will give us some insight into the Borg & reproduction," he
wrote, "or lack thereof. :)"
... So, you're a Borg... Meet many people in your line of work?
