subject: Re: PCI-IDE card

Hello

There are several companies that make PCI IDE cards that work well and at
very reasonable prices. I've heard some people complain about Promise
controllers but I have had nothing but great service from mine. In fact it
has allowed me to hold off purchasing a new motherboard for years because
it effectively updated my old BX chipset ATA limitations in both drive size
and speed. In my case the model Ultra 100TX2 which was designed to operate
at twice the old 33MHz bus speed made my system much more stable since I
overclock, and being an Intel system, the only way to overclock is to up
the FSB, often to offspec PCI/AGP speeds. In overclocking the first area of
real trouble is data loss in hard drive transfers where chipsets won't
operate correctly at higher than design speeds. Because the Promise ( and
other such controllers ) can operate at twice the speed, ie 66MHz,
operating at 37 or 43 for example is no sweat. So now I have a BX chipset
system operating at 1.8GHz with hdd buffer
red reads in excess of 85 MB/sec. This card cost me $24 US and represents
one of the best value purchases I've ever made for a PC. You can certainly
consult hardware test sites like Anandtech, Tom's just to name 2 of many
that might give you info on any better deals, but obviously I'm happy with
the Promise controller.
