| subject: | Re: Dell Dimension & os/2 |
Hello I'm wondering why you don't consider building your own PC. I'd think that you are already performance and reliability oriented or you wouldn't be using OS/2. There are so many advantages to "rolling your own" not the least of which is cash savings but in general what can possibly be bad about getting exactly what you want and nothing you don't want? It would take me a good half hour to consider and write about all the advantages and I really can't think of a single disadvantage other than having individual and different warranties as opposed to one source and even that is offset by your deeper knowledge of exactly what you have installed and the benefit of having chosen parts less likely to ever need warranty claims. If you are simply concerned with whether or not you are capable of building your own I can tell you that it just isn't diffcult and numerous books, magazine articles and online DIY websites make it a step-by-step no brainer. Even a non-technical person can easily assemble a modern PC in a liesurely afternoon amd there are personal benefits to consider as well - the sense of pride and security of knowing intimately what you have goes a long way to a sense of confidence of not being at the mercy of others who certainly know less than you about what you need or want, especially one using an alternative OS where hardware choices include driver concerns. In addition, I'm sure many of your fellow forum members would be happy to help in any way. It might be well worth your while considering this alternative to one-size-fits-all for too many reasons to list.
