In that situation, you get n copies of page 1, followed by n copies
of page 2, followed by n copies of page 3, etc., as opposed to 1 of
each page, in order, as many times as there are copies being made;
and this only affects printers, such as laser printers, that keep a
full page of data together in memory. The difference in speed is a
result of WP's not having to assemble and send the data separately
to such printers for each repetition of the page.
