The 1MB floppy is actually what we remember as the 720KB (MF-DD) floppy and
the 2MB floppy is the 1.44MB (MF-HD) floppy. These are the "unformatted"
capacities. The 2.88MB (MF-XD) floppy is refferred to as the 4MB floppy.

IBM and Microsoft had extended floppy formats that crammed more data onto a
1.44MB floppy for OS install diskettes I think the Windows / DOS one was 1.67
MB and the OS/2 one 1.8MB, but it could have been the other way around.

Most motherboards still support 2.88MB floppy drives but I don't think any new
systems include them anymore, in fact in a lot of cases the floppy drive is
being removed completely as systems have CD-RW or even DVD-RW drives in them
now. IBM now supply a USB memory key instaed of the floppy drive with their
thinkpad notebooks.
