| subject: | Re: Metal or Plastic? |
Processors don't usually have plastic covering on them, so I think you've got a metal top. By the way, you shouldn't be touching it as the grease from your skin may affect heat transfer to the heatsink, but if you've done this already, one way to tell if something is metal or plastic is temperature. If (when not powered on) the top feels cold to the touch, it's probably metal, if it feels to be at room temperature, it's probably a plastic coating. Metal can have a pinkish tint to it. Please make sure that you evenly place the heatsink compound over the whole of this metal area before applying the heatsink and once in place, do not remove the heatsink again - if you have to, you should remove all compound and put new compound in place. You may have a heatsink with the compound already applied to it, so this save a task, however again, if you MUST remove this later, you will need additional heatsink compound. If heat transfer from the processor to the heatsink is not good, the processor will simply cook and destroy itself in a matter of weeks ! Cheers/2 Ed.
