How far back are you checking your standards?  For 200 years, a period
has required two spaces.

Ah, but with the advent of proportional spaced fonts, that standard was 
changed.  Think of your computer as a typewriter or a typesetter.  If 
the latter (why use it otherwise), then the standard is ONE space.

True.  I had to create a printer definition for a daisy wheel used
with WPD 4.2 and it was a very time-consuming process.

That sucks!  You ought to be able to get a complete programming
reference for it from HP somehow (which would, of course, leave you
still having to create your own definition for it).
