Schrödinger claimed in 1943 that life was negentropic, but in fact life
is merely a dissipative entropic process, using free energy to maintain
structure. Look up Ilya Prigogine's work on the topic. I second Guy
Hoelzer's recommendation of _Darwinism Evolving_ as an introduction to
this topic, but I am not sure that it has generated much in the way of
useful theoretical work yet. Again, let me mention Chaisson.

Chaisson, Eric L. 2001. Cosmic evolution: The rise of complexity in
nature. Cambridge MA: Harvard University Press.

Depew, David J., and Bruce H. Weber. 1995. Darwinism evolving: systems
dynamics and the genealogy of natural selection. Cambridge, Mass.: MIT
Press.
