subject: Re: Merlin`s Freckles

I asked this once before and didn't get a reply. I have a 3 month old Timneh
and his chest, belly and legs are covered in bright red feathers(probably
20-25). Does anyone know if these freckles are likely to disappear with age

his first molt? I'm hoping not, but I haven't seen anything in any books or
magazines. His dad had a stray red one on his chest, but his mum didn't have
any. Does anyone know about this?

Wendy:

congratulations on your baby! The red feathers are not a problem! They may
or may not disappear with his first molt...depends on his breeding line.
If cock has a red feather, they may stay!
TAGs (timneh african greys) and CAGs (congo african greys> both use the
designation *king* for birds with the red feathers. Birds that retain
their red markings are generally more valuable/costly because of their
unusual colors. I have one pair that consistently throws males with red
markings. After the first molt, the true red feather disappear and all the
feathers on the birds back end have a reddish wash to them. If I ever find
a hen with red markings I am going to scoop her up. I would love to be
able to breed consistent *kings*.

Also, seems we are neighbors! I live in Town of Vernon. Drop me mail any
time you have questions. I have 3 pr of CAGs,3 pr of Cherryhead conures
plus a 'too, a pr of blue front amazons, a CAG pet and a Cherryhead pet.
