Ovations aren't a no-no, they just aren't regarded as guitars in here.  There 
is a list of suggested uses for Ovations that has been posted and added to 
from time to time.  Most agree that they do make pretty fair emergency backup 
power for boats.
Have you considered maybe a different brand of guitar, perhaps one with a 
little more wood in it?
