I'm far from being a Rexx expert, but it looks to me like each CALL
statement is setting up a stack frame (to hold the return address, if
nothing else). Since you're recursively calling M1, the routine keeps
stuffing more and more on the stack, eventually leading to a stack
overflow condition. Instead of CALLing M1 again after the sub-routines,
I'd suggest just RETURNing, and then loop back to top (GOTO, or
whatever).
