Kathy,
Glad to hear that you still have your dog...but two greyhounds? I have been
studing the kennel down the road that raises hundreds of greyhounds a year.
It
makes me sad to think that probably 95% will be put down.
But, one of the things that I noticed the most is that those pups do not have
any human companionship...at least until they go into training. They train
them, by the way, using guineas. So, you're lucky that your dog is so good.
And I think that is wonderful that you rescued one...maybe two.
Pounding the pavement, huh. Well, lots of luck I quit my job at the end of
December. Being a school bus driver is just toooo stressful. But, it has
worked out well. I am getting thing down around here that I have put off for
too long, because I was two tired.
I am redoing a building and I am going to move all the Timnehs there. It will
be away from the other birds and maybe they will finally breed. I also have
11, now its 9, nest boxes to build and a couple of cages of cages more.
I now have a new use for duct tape. I couldn't find my gloves when I started
cutting wire, so I had visions of hugh blisters. So, I found an ole sock, cut
it up into squares for padding, and put them on my fingers with duct tape.
Two
cages later no blisters and it really worked better than the gloves.
Good luck with the job search.

Fran:
You indicated that you need to build 11 nest boxes. Does this mean you
have 11 pairs of TAG's? If so, can I make a suggestion about your new
setup? Split them into two groups and put a wall between them or in
separate rooms if possible. I hobby breed CAG's and have been told by two
different commercial breeders that greys do not breed well in large
groups. In the wild, only the dominant pairs breed. If you keep your
setups to 8 pair or less you will be most likely to get all to breed.
My first pair of CAG's were the 9th and youngest pair in a setup. They
had not laid or exhibited any mating behavior (tho they were well bonded)
in over 18 months. I got them in October. They wintered in my greenhouse
where min temp was 35-40 degrees. (Wisconsin winters do not lend
themselves to year around breeding!) They laid 4 eggs in early May.
Hatched 3 healthy, happy babies in June. (4th egg was clear-it was 1st one
laid.)
Greys also like quiet. Mixing them with other birds that are noisy will
often deter them from breeding activity.
Good luck with your new set up. Grey babies are a joy!
