Steve,
SW>Well I'm not aware of any national police frequency here in the UK
SW>but I have the following local police frequencys
SW>152.312 AM
SW>152.450 FM
SW>152.687 AM
SW>Various frequencys between 452.000 and 453.000 FM
SW>Various frequencys around 951.000 FM
How come England uses both FM and AM on VHF and UHF? I know
that when police departments over here used AM mode on the
VHF-Lo band (30 - 42 MHz) starting in the 1930's until after
WWII, although most departments still used AM mode in the 1700
and 2000 kHz areas then. There were a few experimental FM mode
stations but due to the cost of the equipment, it never was the
standard until the late 1940's, 1948 seems to stick in my mind,
What type(s) of scanner(s) do you have? I have a Realistic
PRO-2004 base and a PRO-43 handheld along with a Realistic
Patrolman SW-60 that gets 30 - 50 MHz (VHF-Lo), 108 - 174 MHz
(VHF-Hi), and 450 - 512 MHz (UHF-Lo/Hi) along with 6 - 18 MHz
shortwave and AM(MW) and FM. I also have an old Lafeyette
JIL-200 VHF receiver that gets 30 - 50 MHz and 144 - 174 MHz.
I know in the UK, your VHF-Lo band goes from 66 - 88 MHz, give
or take. I have a list of freqs in an old Popular
Communications magazine for the UK with frequencies from 30 - 88
MHz. I have noticed a lot of them are MOULD freqs which have to
do with the UK military. What does MOULD stand for and what is
it for?
SW>It doesn't even appear that the emergency services have a common
SW>frequency to communicate between the various services.
It's a shame that you can't have a common freq. We do have a
few common frequencies but they are not always used. Over here,
the common law enforcement frequency is 155.475 MHz. Here in
Moon Township, Pennsylvania (near Pittsburgh), Moon police is on
460.050 (465.050 repeater input), Moon fire on 33.760 MHz
(main) and 33.860 MHz (auxillary), road department on 154.025
(repeater output/simplex channel) and 155.985 (repeater input
and simplex channel), and ambulance is on 155.775 MHz. I've
heard fire, police, and road department share the various
channels and the ambulance can talk to the police and fire too.
We do have a common freq system, but sometimes it is tough to
determine if they are using the road dept. freq or the fire freq
as a common channel from time to time. Our fire chief's car
must have 5 or 6 antennas on it, it looks like a porcupine! B-)
Chuck, curious on the scanning hobby across the pond......
