KS>KS> CM> I read, somewhere, that ALL aircraft will pull 2 Gs in
KS>KS> CM> a 60 degree bank, regardless of speed, if level flight was
KS>KS> Exactly. It's simple physics!
KS> CM> Seems logical. Do you happen to know the formula
KS> CM> for this?
KS> I believe so . Lemme see if I can do this without diagrams...
KS> In level flight, L=W (lift = weight). We can call these both '1'.
KS> In a bank, the lift vector
KS> is displaced from the vertical by the amount of bank [theta], so then the
KS> *vertical component* still has to be equal to the weight. The
KS> cosine of 60 degrees is 0.5, so the lift is then weight/cos theta
KS> or 2. (Lift is twice the weight). An interesting extrapolation is
KS> to consider a 90 degree bank angle where cos theta is zero and the
KS> lift is 'infinite'. Which probably causes a fair amount of discomfort
KS> to wings and passengers. ;>
Ah, yes, thanks muchly. If I wuz still in my twenties,
with the physics courses or the aviation courses still fresh
in mind, I probably coulda figgered it out myself. I'm 64
now, and things just don't shine clearly any more.
