I noted just a couple hours ago that

This matter has been solved by moving my SCSI card to a different slot;
and forcing some IRQs onto all the installed cards.

Apparently after weeks of running just fine, a power cycle caused an
IRQ re-assignment which resulted on onboard sound and SCSI controller
sharing an IRQ.

The nice good news for everybody who hasn't discovered this yet, while
the Award BIOS is booting up, and has displayed it's pin/irq
assignments for PCI devices, I can, and therefore presumably you also
can, pause the boot process to review and record this important
information before the Boot Manager takes over.
