Flying Saucer Crash Lands in Utah Desert
Image Credit: USAF 388th [3] Range Sqd., Genesis Mission [4] , NASA [5]
Explanation: A flying saucer from outer space crash-landed in the Utah desert
after being tracked by radar and chased by helicopters. The year was 2004, and
no space aliens [6] were involved. The saucer, pictured here [7] , was the
Genesis [8] sample return capsule, part of a human-made robot Genesis [9]
spaceship launched [10] in 2001 by NASA itself to study the Sun. The
unexpectedly hard landing [11] at over 300 kilometers per hour occurred
because the parachutes did not open as planned. The Genesis mission [12] had
been orbiting the Sun [13] collecting solar wind [14] particles that are
usually deflected away by Earth's magnetic field [15] . Despite the crash
landing, many return samples remained in good enough condition to analyze. So
far, Genesis [16] -related discoveries include new details about the
composition [17] of the Sun [18] and how the abundance of some types of
elements differ across the Solar System [19] . These results have provided
intriguing clues [20] into details of how the Sun and planets formed [21]
billions of years ago.
