  The most that I've ever been able to open within a single process is
  32762 (there were 5 handles open at the start).  I've never
  experimented with the system-wide limit.  I suspect that the
  system-wide file handle limit is available memory.

  BTW, this was calling the OS/2 API directly.  Some C++ compilers have
  statically allocated file handle tables, limiting the number of
  open()s and fopen()s that can be made.  Check the macro in .
