Gibbous Moon beyond Swedish Mountain
Explanation: This is a gibbous Moon. More Earthlings [4] are familiar with a
full moon, when the entire face of Luna [5] is lit by the Sun [6] , and a
crescent moon [7] , when only a sliver of the Moon's face [8] is lit. When
more than half of the Moon is illuminated, though, but still short of full
illumination, the phase [9] is called gibbous [10] . Rarely seen in television
and movies, gibbous moon [11] s are quite common in the actual night sky. The
featured image [12] was taken in J„mtland [13] , Sweden [14] near the end of
last month. That gibbous moon [15] turned, in a few days, into a crescent
moon, and then a new moon [16] , then back to a crescent, and a few days ago
back to gibbous. And this same gibbous moon [17] is visible again tonight,
leading up [18] to the Full Beaver Moon [19] that occurs Friday night.
Setting up to capture a picturesque gibbous moonscape, the photographer was
quite surprised [20] to find an airplane, surely [21] well in the
foreground, appearing to fly past it.
