Thanks for the info. My Maxtor is 6Y080P0 it's an ATA-133 drive. I
changed the drive from CS to master/no slave and kept 80 wire cable
attached. Set up a fat16 and fat32 partition with Powermax, with LVM a
JFS partition. Was able to write with os2, (sounding like the little
drummer boy and about 30 seconds to write a 20 meg file) couldn't read.
Windows kept giving blue screens when I tried to write to it. DaniS506
still reported UltraDMA 5. I then changed to 40 wire cable. Bios now
says no 80 wire cable on ide channel 1. Maxtor drive now works fine
with DaniS506 reporting UltraDMA 2.
What I cannot figure out is why it used to work at ATA-100 and now not.
I hope it wasn't as simple as enabling prefetch mode in bios. However
the WD 40 gig ATA-100 has no problem with the settings. It is attached
on 80 wire cable to IDE channel 0, set as CS with DVD/RW slaved to it
set as CS. both work flawlessly.
Found a Seagate 80 gig ATA-100 drive for $55. Thinking of getting that
one and saving this one for the next motherboard I buy someday which
will have ATA-133 controller on it.
