Hello Roy -

RJT> This is one of the things that bothers me a lot about
RJT> later stuff, anything windows 3.1 and beyond...

RJT> What all of that install software is doing is not
RJT> apparent. And what needs to be done to fix things when it
RJT> messes up is not apparent either, unless I want to spend
RJT> some nontrivial amount of time getting to know how to mess
RJT> around in the registry and other such stuff.

I don't believe those who claim to 'know' the registry. It's
far too complex and each third party software company has it's
own methods for mucking around in it.

RJT> The one time I tried to do that sort of thing I ended up
RJT> making such a mess out of it that the machine was hardly

RJT> installation completely, probably a good thing anyhow, and
RJT> re-installing from scratch. The original install on that
RJT> box was 95 with a bunch of "corporate legacy" in there
RJT> from its original home in some office somewhere. It was
RJT> way better after that.

Same here. This W2K would auto-reboot every 45 minutes when I
first got it. After some tweaking and editing of the registry I
can leave it on for months without a reboot if I don't install
any new software.

RJT> It's getting less than stable these days, though. I'm
RJT> thinking that it's time for me to build another box, that
RJT> the hardware in that one is aging to the point where I
RJT> might want to get something else going. And when I do that
RJT> it'll be a dual-boot setup, with linux on there as well.
RJT> The box that's getting replaced is that compaq I've
RJT> mentioned in here before, lots of proprietary stuff and
RJT> only a P66 w/32M of ram, it's about time to replace it
RJT> with something newer...

I have a Pentium 1 at 60mhz and a Compaq 486 at 66mhz with DOS
and W31 installed on them and still enjoy using them. Granted
the browsers fall short at websites using javascript that's
really the _only_ gripe I usually have about using them. :-)
