subject: Year 2000 Test package available

* Crossposted to FTSC_PUBLIC : Discussion with FTSC

Hi Folks,

The first edition of the FTSC Working Group Y (Year 2000) tests is now available.

For information only, file request

FTSC2000

from 2:443/13. For the tests sets themselves, file request

FTSC2000.ARC
FTSC2000.LHA
FTSC2000.ZIP
FTSC2000.RAR

These sets contain the test details, some sample PKT files, and a results
form. The idea is that when you test the packages you are interested in,
the data will be collected centrally and summaries will be posted on a
regular basis.

Constructive feedback on the tests and projects is encouraged. I'm not
interested in, nor will I engage in, endless arguments about new packet
formats. I'll be as pleased as everyone else if a new PKT format is
universally implemented by Dec 31 1999, but I'll also be pretty surprised.
Work on such things should continue, but this project is a separate
endeavour, which is the best way to protect the network.

I would like to thank the members of the FTSC, the working group Y and its
invited guests, and the members of this conference for all the help,
suggestions and useful debate so far.

I would also like to acknowledge the support and encouragement of Z2C and
Z4C and their generous offers of addresses for the test sets.

Finally I apologise for the delay in this release, for which I take
responsibility, as many of you will understand, sometimes real world work
interferes with this great hobby. It was also essential IMO to check the
tests as carefully as possible before release.
