QS> management and organization of this, and has asked me to recommend a QS> book on this subject. Thus I am asking you... The Mythical Man-Month is a classic (and quite a bit more pricey than the $9.95 it once was). It's not an in-depth treatment, and it's kind of dated, but from the cover (prehistoric beasts mired in the La Brea tar pits) on, it covers stages of a project quite well. Disregard the dated mainframey stuff. his chapter, "The Second System Syndrome" is particularly good. Dr. Brooks was project leader on OS/360, which was, er, a few years late. He left IBM to teach at UNC, so there were quite a few used copies around Chapel Hill. If Scott Adams' Dilbert cartoons have made it into a book yet, I highly recommend them. If not, find someone who gets them in the paper and have them cut out and sent to your brother. Dilbert addresses things that the management books will NEVER tell you. at least, truthfully. politics and morale. "comp" time. 60hr weeks. he might also look up the classic "executive monkey" study where monkeys were conditioned to press a "correct button", then later given an electric shock no matter which button they pressed. they got ulcers much more than monkeys who could avoid the shocks. and a suggestion from me: tell him to keep a few major decisions that his supervisor has to make in reserve on those "all-out" ef- forts- where he and the coders are sweating on Sunday afternoon while the creep who ordered it is sucking a beer and watching football. that way, about halfway through the 2nd Quarter, your brother can call up and say, "We need you here to make this decision by 3:30PM or we can't have the code ready on Monday AM.". Of course, your brother will be right there with the troops in such a situation or he deserves a similar call. ___ X KWQ/2 1.2e X Nick T sez: you're bus-bandwidth-limited at the pinouts --- Maximus/2 2.02* Origin: OS/2 Shareware BBS, Fairfax, VA: 703-385-4325 (1:109/347) SEEN-BY: 12/2442 54/54 620/243 624/50 632/348 640/820 690/660 711/409 410 413 SEEN-BY: 711/430 807 808 809 934 942 949 712/353 623 713/888 800/1 @PATH: 109/347 2 7 3615/50 229/2 12/2442 711/409 54/54 711/808 809 934 |
