LA> PM> I understand its often not the case, but it always
LA> PM> surprises me as to how many able bodied folks will pay
LA> PM> money to connect two to four color-coded wires together
LA> PM> to matching color-coded (or at least clearly lettered
LA> PM> with the first letter of the coded color) terminals.
LA> PM> With an 8.00 "bell hangers" bit and a spool of wire and
LA> PM> a stapler it shouldn't take more than an hour to wire-up
LA> PM> most homes (less if one believes in crimp connectors).
LA> Bite your tongue!!! I have been at too many houses where the
LA>NOISY STATIC problem is caused by someone using crimp connectors.
LA>Scotch Lock (correct size for the gauge of wire) connectors are a
LA>different issue though. A connection that is "shaky" can cause more
LA>problems than it it is worth by making things faster.
This same argument can be made about all consumer wiring jobs.
(how many houses burn yearly because of it). (My NOISY STATIC
problems have always been the connection(s) a foot or so off
the pole were the drop to the house is attached...except the
day it got very quiet because we didn't have loop current
anymore because the last strand broke.) I don't happen to
believe in crimp connectors myself (at least not for connections
last should last decades).
LA> But I do agree, TPC (The Phone Company...see The President's
LA>Analyst) charges way too much for something so simple to do.
I have not seen that in years (never the whole thing...but
I do remember the truck picking up the phone booth with the
poor guy still inside)...good old TPC. (Of course it is
still common to have 5+ dollars charged for someone to toggle
a service code to enable a feature that the TPC switch could
have given for free (it has to be supported in the switch to
begin with)...and then charge for the setting being active
on a monthly basis. (Caller ID is a wonderful case of this.)
